Catchy post title, no? I thought so.
Following one of the greatest title fights in UFC history, many fans and media dumbshits alike called for an immediate second fight between light heavyweight champ Jonny Bones Jones and Alexander Gustafsson. Glover Teixeira was granted his own title shot by Marshall Zelaznik in early September after a TKO win over Ryan “Once upon a time, I was worth a shit; nowadays not so much” Bader. The other day it was reported that Jones had a change of heart as far as fighting Gustafsson again, and everyone’s favorite man of the hour Dana White told ESPN’s Brett Okamoto that Jones will face Teixeira next year:
UFC president Dana White confirmed Jones’ next opponent to ESPN.com on Wednesday. According to White, Jones personally requested to fight Teixeira next.
“That’s what the champ wants,” White said. “We’ll probably have that fight on the Super Bowl card in New Jersey.”
Teixeira (20-2) is 5-0 in the UFC with 4 of his 5 victories ending inside the distance.
The Super Bowl weekend card is set for February 1st at the Prudential Center in Newark, and past reports suggest this card will air live on Fox Sports 1. It’s also important to note that Fox has the Super Bowl this year, so perhaps they’ve been angling to nab the UFC event traditionally set in Las Vegas on PPV, and are looking to broadcast the main card on either Fox or FS1.
Gustafsson’s next fight will be in his home country of Sweden, but a date for that event is TBD.
