In an old Tracy McGrady/Adidas commercial from about five or so years ago (the one that featured the rap song “What Happened to That Boy” by Birdman), a voice clip of McGrady was added as it showed him pulling up for jumpers and dunking basketballs, with him saying “I’m worried about all these kids coming straight into the league, not getting their education. But that’s all right. I’ll be taking them to school, every night.”
Hell, T-Mac, let me talk to you while you sit on your ass awaiting microfracture surgery: I’m worried about all these damn free agents being tossed around in the National Football League.
Former Tennessee Titans defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth signing a freakin’ $100 million deal with the Washington Redskins. Are you kiddin’ me? This guy has one good season in 2007 and a great season in 2008 (please don’t negate what I just said — I didn’t look up the stats, and am basing that from what I’ve heard from ESPN, Yahoo! Sports, and Titans fans), and Snyder and Co. are throwing $100 million at the guy? Hey, he also had a season where he stomped on a guy’s head. Cool deal. That Haynesworth guy is all about respect, dignity and class, eh?
In all seriousness, why pay him so much when he very well may have pulled an NFL version of a Vince Carter? As in the de facto of playing phenomenally in his contract season and failing to pan out the next year? Hell, the Houston Texans gave now ex-Cardinal Antonio Smith $35 million after he only had about 40 tackles/3.5 sacks this past season. Sounds like money is being thrown around for the sake of popularity now, huh?
I don’t know what to make of it. I really don’t. I’m freaked out by all the changes. If I didn’t know any better, it would seem like Barack Obama had instituted that mantra to the stage of professional football by all the changes we all have witnessed.
Brian Dawkins in a Denver Broncos jersey in 2009 after spending 13 seasons in Philadelphia playing for the Eagles? Bart Scott inking a $48 million deal with the New York Jets — the same Jets team that traded for Philadelphia’s Leto Shepherd? Matt Cassel, who before the 2008 season, hadn’t started a football game since he was playing in high school, departing to the Kansas City Chiefs? Kellen Winslow, Jr. on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers? Wow oh wow.
This is too crazy.
I think I’m gonna go have to lie down for a couple of hours.
